Consulate Photo by Ayo DurodolaTYPE OF CONTEST: Essay Contest BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This competition demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to promoting the spirit of creativity, vision, patriotism and public speaking among youth. The competition is geared at sensitizing the younger generation about their civic responsibility to take personal responsibility for charting their own course in life and contributing to the development of their nation. It also aims to develop writing and speaking ability as well as encourage the youth to formulate dreams and pursue them. ELIGIBILITY: Essayists must: o be citizens or nationals of Nigeria; o be between the ages of 18 and 30; o possess personal integrity and submit only original ideas. Essayists who are found to have plagiarized their work will be disqualified. RULES AND REGULATIONS: Essay Topic: My Dream for Nigeria and What I can Do to Make a Difference. o The essayists should write a 500 word essay on the topic. o The essays will be reviewed by a panel comprising U.S. Mission staff, alumni of USG programs, and writers. o A Review Panel will read and judge the originality, creativity, logical development and strength of expression in the essays in addition to usual composition requirements. PRIZE: a) The selected essays, along with the name of the respective essayists, will be published on our Mission Websites, nigeria.usembassy.gov/ b) The selected essayists will be eligible to participate in the Dream or Prophecy Speech Contest, the Finals of which will be held in January 2014, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday. c) Certificates will be issued to all participants. d) Prizes will be given to the top finalists in the speech contest.
