ENTRY REQUIREMENTS General Requirements a. Applicants must have a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE)/International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) or other internationally recognized qualifications comparable to ‘O’ level certificate with at least six credit passes (i.e. a minimum of grade ‘6’ at MSCE and grade ‘C’ at IGCSE) including English Language obtained in 2013, 2012, or 2011; • The following is the University of Malawi adaptation of IGCSE results for admission purposes: A*= 1; A = 2; B = 3; C = 5; D = 7; EFG = 8. • Candidates who failed to satisfy the university entry requirements in 2011 or 2012 but successfully improved their grades after re-sitting a maximum of four subjects in 2012 or 2013 may use their supplementary statements for accumulating credits. • Candidates cannot combine grades from two independent certificates, i.e. candidates who were awarded a full certificate in 2011 or 2012 and reattempted MSCE in 2013 and obtained another full certificate cannot combine grades from the two independent certificates for purposes of accumulating credits. b. Candidates who fulfil these requirements will be required to sit for the University Entrance Examination (UEE) which will be administered on THURSDAY, 10TH APRIL, 2014. Registration for the examinations would be done on Tuesday 8th April and Wednesday 9th April, 2014. (ii) Candidates with Special Needs a. Candidates with special needs (e.g. visually impaired, e.t.c) who cannot manage to take the University Entrance Examinations should apply to the University Registrar for a waiver prior to the examinations. Such candidates will be considered for selection based on the general entry criteria of six credits including English Language and the specific programme requirements. b. All applications for a UEE waiver must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documents in the form of a formal application letter, a photograph of the candidate and a medical report issued by a registered medical practitioner. NOTE: All candidates who were withdrawn from the University of Malawi or any comparable institution on academic grounds and those already registered with the University of Malawi or any comparable university as residential or non-residential students are not eligible for admission. All candidates except those who are using MSCE results obtained from one sitting either in 2013 or 2012 or 2011 should send their application forms together with copies of their statement of results or certificates officially stamped and signed by the headmaster/headmistress of the secondary/high school where they wrote their examinations, or the District Education Manager, or the District Commissioner or any Commissioner of Oaths. 3. ADMISSION ARRANGEMENTS a. Candidates will be placed in various programmes bearing in mind the candidates’ choice of programmes and their specific entry requirements. b. Candidates who will fail to qualify for selection as government sponsored students will only be considered for selection as self-sponsored students if they expressly indicated their willingness to be considered for self-sponsored entry on the answer sheet they will use during UEE. UNIMA will not issue a separate call of applications for self-sponsored entry. c. Candidates who will fail to compete successfully in the programmes of their choice during selection of government sponsored students will only be considered for redirection to programmes they did not choose if they expressly indicate their willingness to be considered for redirection on the answer sheet they will use during UEE. Redirection of candidates does not apply to selection of self-sponsored candidates. d. All successful candidates shall be admitted on non-residential basis. Candidates who would like to be accommodated on College campuses would have to apply for the same to their respective colleges and if accepted, they shall pay the College for their accommodation and meals. e. Because Colleges shall not have the capacity to accommodate all selected students on campus, allocation of college accommodation shall be done based on respective college criteria. 4. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Application forms can be obtained on written request or in person from the address given below, the Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing and the following affiliate colleges of the University of Malawi: St John of God College of Nursing, Malawi College of Forestry and Malawi College of Fisheries. The Application form can also be downloaded from the admissions or downloads section on the University of Malawi website: unima.mw. All applicants are strictly required to deposit a non-refundable application fee of K6,000.00 for Malawians using 2013 qualifications, K7,000.00 for Malawians using 2012 or 2011 certificates and those who are accumulating credits from more than one examination sitting and U$300.00 for international applicants to the following bank account: STANDARD BANK OF MALAWI Account Name UNIMA Entrance Examination Account Number 0140061008400 Branch Zomba Branch Swift Code SBICMWMX Duly completed application forms together with a copy of the bank deposit slip bearing the name of the candidate should be sent to the address given below and not to any constituent/affiliate college of the University of Malawi.
