The 49ers get a slight edge as the top overall class because they were able to hit immediate needs with the likes of center Marcus Martin and speedy wide receiver Bruce Ellington in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. Grantlands Bill Barnwell put it best when he made this pronouncement on Twitter after the 49ers moved back and still landed Martin with the 70th pick. On top of that, general manager Trent Baalke kept his eye on 2015 and beyond. Frank Gore is 30 years old and entering the last year of his contract. Carlos Hyde is a bigger version of Gore with more top-end speed. Star linebacker NaVorro Bowman is still recovering from that brutal knee injury suffered in the NFC Championship Game, so the 49ers added Chris Borland, who has terrific instincts and moves all over the field. Guard Brandon Thomas would have been an early second-round pick if he didnt blow out his ACL during the draft process. No problem, as the 49ers can redshirt him in 2014 and get him ready to take over for Mike Iupati, who is due to become a free agent after next season. Even first-round pick Jimmie Ward, who didnt light the world on fire Thursday night, has the versatility to fill the nickel corner spot vacated by Carlos Rogers. Oh yeah, the 49ers were also able to bolster their receiver corps by landing Stevie Johnson in a trade with the Bills on Friday. Seattle is on top of the NFL world right now, but San Francisco reminded everyone why its not sitting on its hands hoping to get there. An absolutely brilliant draft for a franchise that needed good news considering all the offseason headlines its been in. Worst Draft: Indianapolis Colts Its a good thing the Colts stunk two years ago to get Andrew Luck as Peyton Mannings replacement, because the front office isnt doing him a lot of favors when it comes to the draft. MLB Network host Chris Rose, who has dabbled in work on NFL Network, summed up the future for Luck very nicely with this nugget: One year after having a mediocre draft that Sports Illustrateds Chris Burke essentially said was doomed to fail, the Colts entered the 2014 draft without a first-round pick due to the Trent Richardson trade. Their first pick was Jake Mewhort, a run-blocking specialist who will have to play guard in the NFL. Donte Moncrief has speed but isnt polished as a route-runner and doesnt show the ability to make plays over the middle. Hes basically a slower version of Darrius Heyward-Bey. Meanwhile, the Colts did nothing to address their need at safety after losing Antoine Bethea to free agency and will rely on the stellar-but-aging Robert Mathis to carry the defensive line. Luck has hidden a lot of Indianapolis problems the last two years, but eventually the front office has to start surrounding him with young, impact talent to win a championship.
