2014 : Topsy-turvied Year History is a compilation of individulas, groups, communities narratives and stories. History is believed to feed essentially on the past. This latter, in turn, supplies the present and even the future. Past is d the inescapable burden or asset to capitalize on or discard. The year 2014 verges on its end. What are some of the turning point events in it? What morlaes can we deduce from it? In what ways, deos it relate to our potential future. 2014 witnessed ups and downs in humanity’s actions, reactions and interactions. Two main incidents overshadow many others: the outbreak of Ebola and the emergence of ISIS (or just IS). Ebola has, again, proven the frailty of the global health structures, infastuctures and capacities. “The global village”, to use Marshal McLuhan, is susceptible to health-related diseases and epidemics. The inescapably uncontrolled flow of people referred to as “ethnoscapes ” exacerbate and render tragedies uncontrollable and uncontainable. Politically, IS made headlines in the second half of the year. Its affiliations, roots, prosepcts and controversial claims have generated a plethora of (counter)discourses. One more year has elapsed from our lives. That ought to be our main concern, I guess. Life expectancy countdown is on rush. The ontological question that is intriguing, in this regard, is how long shall we/I still live? Will life be more generous to grant us/me more years to compensate for, at least, some of the mistakes and calamities we/I (un)willingly made/did.
