2014 won’t be over until it’s over but Twitter, Pinterest and the rest of the social media gang have already published their year in review posts. What are they going to do if something major happens in the next three weeks? Do they think it’s too late for anything to eclipse the marvel that was Ellen’s Oscar selfie or Taylor Swift shaking it off? We’ll just have to wait and see and hope but in the mean time let’s gather around the screen of your choice and relive those precious memories together. Twitter 2014 People sent out more than 500 million Tweets per day on Twitter but Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie took the prize for the most reTweeted Tweet of the year. This post was a winner for a couple of reasons. First, it was picked up by the fans of each of the celebs in the photo so that’s a big audience right there. More importantly, this image made Oscar nominated celebrities look like real people having some simple fun. It was both relatable and aspirational. It also demonstrates the power of spontaneous posting – both good (in this case) and bad (US Airways). It wasn’t all fun and games in 2014, millions of people used Twitter to voice their opinions on a couple of very serious subjects including the events in Ferguson, the mass kidnapping in Nigeria, and governmental electoral reforms in Hong Kong. On the lighter side, World Cup fans sent 672 million Tweets. At the peak, fans posted 618,725 Tweets per minute, setting a record for the year. For those who would like to relive every big moment of the past year, Twitter has put together an interactive hashtag page. Or you can click over to the Perspectives tab for a singular look at the year’s events through the eyes of celebs such as Lady Gaga, Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad, Robert Downey Jr., and The Duke of York. Pinterest 2014 2015 Pinterest decided that they’d rather look ahead than look back, so they’re using their recap time to predict the future. The Pinterest 100 is a selection of pins that they believe are indicative of where we’re going in 2015. You can use these predictions to help plan your campaigns for 2015 or not. . . it’s up to you. Here are a couple of my top picks from the Pinterest 100: Woodworking is having a moment in DIY. Rug Stencils (it’s paint on the floor to look like it’s a rug). Vertical gardening. That’s how they do it at Pinterest. Later this week . . . YouTube and Facebook. #Social
