2015: Ogoni Hope Dims The hope of the Ogoni ethnic nationality of Rivers State to produce the governor of Rivers State in 2015 appears to be on the balance following strong indications by the Kalabaris and other ethnic groups in the state to field their best for the contest. The situation is made worse for Ogonis by the declaration of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state that merit rather than zoning would be the criterion for determining who becomes Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s successor, a stance that has rattled Ogonis but which many believe is the best and democratic option for the state. Meanwhile, the Ogoni’s are unhappy, with Suanu Baridam, Chairman, Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers threatening that his people would boy cot the 2015 election if one of their own is not fielded for the office by the parties. However, observers are contending that it is not only the Ogonis that have the right to run for the office in 2015, especially, when other parts of the state boast of very qualified candidates who have what it takes to lead the state. Political analysts faulted the alarm of the traditional ruler against the opening of political space in a democracy, urging him to present the best that Ogoni has, to meet the best from other sections of the state from where the electorates will choose their leader, insisting that nobody will be shut out because of the claim of the Ogonis that it is their turn.
