2017 Painkiller Cup Attracts Top SUP Racers Racers from around the World will compete in the 2015 Painkiller Cup. Scheduled for January 17th the event features stand-up and surf ski racing and offers $12,000 in prize money. The events unique format features stand-up paddle (SUP) teams racing 14-miles downwind from Trellis Bay to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke. Each team must include at least one female paddler. The winning SUP team will earn $5,000. The surf ski portion of the race is contested by single paddlers who depart 30-mins following the SUP teams. A mini-Painkiller Cup catering to less intrepid racers is also a feature of the event. The mini event starts at Sandy Cay with a finish at the Soggy Dollar Bar. Start time for the SUP teams is 10:00am from Trellis Bay. The teams paddle downwind to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Each team is followed by a chase boat and there are mandatory 25-minute changeovers. The first team is expected in about 2 hours and thirty minutes. Uniquely, each team must include at least one female paddler. Team Mexico is shaping up to be the team to beat. Featuring Floridian SUP and surf start Ryan Helm, Mexican standout Javier “Beto” Jiminez and Shelby Taylor the trio will be pressed by Team St Croix headed by Bill Kraft. Kraft collected the 2nd place overall in the 2014 Painkiller Cup. Other teams include a St John Trio called the honey Badgers which includes last years 2nd place team member Nat Ford, and another strong team from St Croix paddling under the Freedom City Surf name. This team top Canadian female paddler Jessica Rando. Organized by Ocean Promotions who formerly managed the annual HIHO windsurfing race the Painkiller Cup is the Caribbean’s richest professional paddle event. “Sup is the fastest growing watersport in the World,” explained Ocean Promotions head honcho Andy Morrell. “It’s great to have a top level event in the BVI. And it’s great to see top paddlers traveling here from all over the World!’ The event, which is in its 3rd year, is sponsored by the Soggy Dollar Bar. HIHO is the secondary sponsor. Other sponsors include Ocean Potion sun protection.
