22 - Knowledge for Right Living - Psalm 119:97-104 MEM ל 97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies (witness, sayings) are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts (mandates, decreed limits). 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way (lifestyle), that I may keep Your word. 102 I have not departed from Your judgments (verdicts, decisions), for You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words (Scriptures) to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts (mandates, decreed limits) I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way (lifestyle). Verse 97: Meditation is a prerequisite discipline for the Christian who desires to be everything that God has called him/her to be. To meditate is to ponder and contemplate. Meditation in general is one’s thought life. Biblical meditation is one’s directed and controlled thought life. David has declared that he loves the law of God and meditates it all the daylong. We do meditate on that which we love. What is your meditation? Verse 98: How do you become wiser than your enemies? They are always around you know! David declares that it is through His commandments. When you live the word, the Holy Spirit will make even your enemies to be at peace with you. Try it God’s way—you’ll like it! Verse 99: How did David obtain more understanding than even his teachers? He meditated on the testimonies of God, that is, those things that God has witnessed directly to him via His Scriptures, or words of knowledge and wisdom from His Spirit to David’s heart. Verse 100: It is not enough to know and have His testimonies and precepts. You must also keep (do) His precepts. Make a practice to do it His way. That in itself is wisdom from Him. Verse 101: It is not only what you do, but also what you do not do. We must make ourselves an enemy to walking down any path of evil. In this we hate what God hates. Verse 102: We must live by the decisions and verdicts that God has placed on our lives. Again, it is doing it God’s way. If He is not Lord of all then is He Lord at all? Verse 103: David came to love the word of God regardless of its form. The Word became sweeter than honey. Do you eat the Word like a candy bar or like bread soaked in vinegar? Verse 104: How do we get the God-given type of understanding? Doing it God’s way! We receive understanding through God’s precepts. One of the precepts is to fear the Lord. We fear the Lord when we hate, that is, make an enemy those things that God hates (Proverbs 6:16-19, 8:13).
