#22: The Big Lebowski (1998) [Joel & Ethan Coen] “.....do you see what happens Larry?” I’ve often said, and I still stand by the opinion that The Big Lebowski is the most quotable movie ever made. At least for me, it is. For anybody who has seen The Big Sleep (1946) you’ll probably recognize a lot of similar plot-points in The Big Lebowski. This takes the broad-strokes of the plot of a classic detective, film-noir story except has the main character be a middle-aged stoner nobody in a bowling league. He, through random circumstance, gets involved with the problems of an older and richer man also named Jeffrey Lebowski which results in a complex mystery that, in all honesty, doesn’t really matter. The “plot” is just a way of getting this character (and others) in situations for them to exchange hilarious words with each other. The constantly witty and fast-paced dialogue is a never-ending source of humor. The Coens are simply and literally brilliant. They have never made a bad movie. Even their duds are still above average. This is usually considered to be their best (or at least most famous) film, and with good reason. I don’t even have the space to go in to the hilarious performances by John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman. SEE IT IF YOU HAVEN’T.
