25 years ago today, Saturday October 15th, 1988, I DJed my very first wedding. Though I dont remember the couples names I do, for some reason, remember their wedding song (Just You and I by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle). I was nervous as hell and was literally still tearing the plastic off of albums that I had bought that morning to complete my record package during cocktail hour (What was the name of that record store we used at Star DJs?) The wedding went well enough that I got a $50 tip and compliments from the bride and groom. 2200+ career events later (and coming up on my 2,000th wedding) I should thank John Murphy and Rick Galdi for giving me a shot and believing in me. Rick was instrumental in training me that summer and to this day I still hear his voice telling me to fill in the breaks of songs and talk up the vocals (although the tip I learned about knowing everyone is done eating and its time to reopen the dance floor when you see the cigarette smoke rising through the room has become out dated) I graduated Stars training program with David Allen Pratt who has gone on to great things in his radio career. One other odd thing I remember about that day. On the drive home from the wedding I was listening to game one of the World Series. The Dodgers had just beaten my Mets in the NL playoffs so I was rooting for The As and happy to hear they had a lead late in the game with their great closer Dennis Eckersley on the mound in the 9th. But before I got back home the game ended with that dramatic, Kirk Gibson home run. I heard the now famous Jack Buck call (I dont believe what I just saw) driving home. Every time I see that highlight I think to myself, that was the day of my first gig. 25 years . . .
