28:19 Although all extant manuscripts contain the phrase, - TopicsExpress

28:19 Although all extant manuscripts contain the phrase, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, earlier writings by the historian Eusebius of Caesarea suggest that this phrase is not original, but was added later to the text. Eusebius records Jesus as saying, "Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations in my name." Eusebius (270-340 A.D.), who had access according to Jerome to the earliest, if not the actual manuscript of Matthew’s gospel, quotes Matthew 28:19 a minimum of 18 times in his writings dating between 300 - 325. In every occurrence, the verse is written with no mention of baptism or the trine name, but that disciples should be made in my name. This is in perfect agreement with Luke’s record of this same event in his Gospel, who records Jesus as saying "that repentance, and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations..." (24:47) Also to be considered is the fact that the Apostles never baptized using the trine formula, but rather invoked the "only name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Also see Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, 19:5. For more detailed analysis of the evidence for and against the traditional text of Matt. 28:19,
