28th August: 1833 The House of Commons approved the Abolition Act. This meant an end to slavery throughout much of the British Empire. 1914 The Battle of Heligoland Bight, the first major naval battle of World War I, was fought. The Germans lost 1,000 sailors and four ships. British casualties numbered 33. 1972 Prince William killed. Prince William of Gloucester died as his light aircraft crashed. 1981 For the third time in 10 days, a world record in the mile run was set. Sebastian Coe, who broke Steve Ovett’s record on August 19th only to lose it to Ovett on August 26th, regained the record - in Brussels, in 3:47.33. 1986 Margaret Thatcher was at the re-opening of the Grand Hotel in Brighton where she and Conservative Party members had been staying in 1983 when it was bombed by the IRA. 2013 St. Hilda’s school shop is open, from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon.
