29 January 2014 Support an essential success Somali Fair Fishing (SFF) has proven its idea and need your financial support - now! The new Danish development organization Somali Fair Fishing has in less than one year demonstrated the sustainability of the organizations basic idea to improve the local economy and employment in the fishery sector in Somaliland at the Horn of Africa. See photos and reports on facebook/fairfishing.org With private funds, SFF in record time has established a fishery station, helped local fishermen to improve their equipment and not least raised the quality of the local and poorly developed fishery. More private funding now is the precaution to ensure further development. Somali Fair Fishing is a non-profit NGO (Non Governmental Organization), driven by voluntary collaboration between Danes and Danish - Somalis from the business and development environment. The project has not received public funding, but is made possible by private donations and very much support in terms of equipment from a number of large Danish companies. Because SFF, until now, is operating without public funding, this is an appeal for financial support for the next phase. We need many supporting members and/or direct financial aid for the upcoming challenging period. SFF Fair Fishing station is created in the harbour of the city of Berbera, Somaliland with five, second-hand 40-foot MAERSK reefer-containers (refrigerated) and a brand-new flake-ice machine as core components. The station opened in October 2013, and in the last months of 2013 it clearly documented that it easily can receive more than 1 ton of fresh fish a day and process it. Local staff handles the fish, and in December we began further processing of the fish, so the station can now deliver refrigerated, fresh, filleted fish in high quality. We have invented an easy and fairly inexpensive concept that can be easily transferred to other parts of Somalia, and at the same time meet the necessary hygiene and quality standards. SFF has chosen a faster approach to development than traditional development projects. The project was initiated with a proof of concept period (2013) that should demonstrate the potential. This has been done to the fullest. The station now provides daily flake-ice for the local fishermen to bring at sea. Now possibilities for increasing fisheries for the benefit of the fragile state economy and employment are very large. The next phase is about direct aid to fishermen, training and capacity development, and - not least - the development of local ownership of what is being built. We have established a representative Advisory Board in Somaliland advise SFF’s processes and strengthen planning. Together with local fishermen and other stakeholders involved, we must prepare for the continuation of the project results. The whole chain from sea to table needs to be developed an improved. Fair Fishing is a development project in an area of the world, characterized by significant difficulties but also great opportunities. It is a project that unites Danish - Somali forces and show that a different and better future is possible. Visit fairfishing.org and see more about who and what we are.
