3 December summary: Day 3 -- The Ukrainian parliament has voted against holding a vote of no confidence in the government. They needed 226 votes, but only came up with 186. -- The protest tent camp remains in Independence Square. Although the crowd was sparse during the day, it swelled to at least 15,000 last night. Protesters remain holed up in the city administration building and the central labor-union building. -- In a television interview last night, President Viktor Yanukovych condemned police violence on November 30, but also criticized the occupation of government buildings, saying people were hiding behind children for personal gain. Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, accused the opposition of planning a coup detat. -- Russian President Vladimir Putin, visiting Yerevan, called the protests a pogrom, and said they had nothing to do with the European Union. -- Yanukovych, who is scheduled to visit China and Russia this week, says he still favors EU integration. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso spoke by telephone with Yanukovych yesterday and the Ukrainian president asked to send a delegation to discuss terms of an Association Agreement. -- Until late November, Yanukovych had said he intended to sign a pact with Europe, but backed out after pressure from Moscow. He also refused to allow former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to leave prison for medical care in Germany -- a key European demand.
