3 Situations When You Shouldn’t Answer the Door When you are at home, alone or not, answering the door is not always a wise move. One morning shortly after moving into my new home, a knock came at the door. Having grown up in a small town, I quickly pulled the door open and said “hi”. I was a little taken aback to find a policeman there (he was questioning people about some vandalism that had happened in the neighbourhood the previous evening). With a frown he asked why I opened the door. My answer was “because you rang the bell.” He proceeded to lecture me about the danger of opening the door without checking to see who is there. You too need to know when you should not open the door. You Can’t See Who It Is If you can’t see who is on the other side of your door, you simply shouldn’t answer it. As a minimum you should invest in a peephole for your door. An even better solution is a home security system with a video camera that allows you to look at who is at your door from wherever you are in your home. You never have to give away the fact that you are at home. You Know It Is a Solicitor More than the fact that often salespeople can waste your time and be hard to deter, opening the door to a solicitor can be risky. You never know when the individual posing as a salesperson is in fact someone with an ulterior motive. Keep yourself safe, don’t open the door. Burglars often dress as salespeople or lawn care workers. You Don’t Know the Person Even if you see that the person is in uniform, what’s to say that the person is a legitimate policeman or fireman? If you do not know the individual, and he or she is in uniform, call the police or fire station closest to your home to make sure that the person at your door is supposed to be there. Never open the door to a stranger. If you are at home alone or with the whole family, opening the door to an unknown person can cause trouble. Whoever is at the door can grab you and have you in a compromising position before anyone else realizes something is amiss. Keep yourself and your family safe by keeping the door closed to everyone but friends and family.
