3 ballot initiatives in the works for Alachua County: 1. A new charter transportation surtax. 2. Single Member Districts 3. County Commission term limits. The tax, I feel the transportation monies historically collected have been completely squandered and the county does not need anyone of our money. They have a spending problem not an income problem. The single member districts, is incredibly positive for western part of the county in particular. This allows the citizens in an area to elect their own representative. As it stands now the County Commission seats are at large and voted on at large so folks in Gainesville are voting on who represents Newberry. I think the desires are completely different in those two groups. Regarding terms limits, I am not a fan only because the limit goes both ways. If you have a good commissioner you want to keep they could term out. So it only seems like a good idea when you have a long term commissioner you dont like. However, I certainly support putting it to a vote. Like share and message/post your comments.
