3 in 4 Newcastle Fans Believe Mike Ashley Won’t Spend Big In Transfer Market Yesterday we asked the following question; ‘Do You Think NUFC’s Record Transfer Fee Of £16m (Michael Owen) Will Ever Be Beaten By Mike Ashley?’ This was some of the background we gave to asking the fans their view on this particular question; However, when West Ham snap up Carroll at a price that probably exceeded the Owen deal and clubs such as Swansea, Southampton, Norwich and others are actively looking to pay £10m or more for players then surely the writing is on the wall if you want to compete. Yes we hope that Graham Carr can keep up his impressive strike rate but especially with strikers there comes a time when you have to pay the price on the ticket if you want to compete. So do you think that Mike Ashley will ever pay more than £16m for a player? When answering I think two things should be kept in mind; how long you guess he might be sticking around and then also how ambitious do you think Newcastle’s owner is in making the club successful? don’t really know what I expected the voting to tell us (thanks yet again to the thousands of you who took the time to vote in our latest poll) but it ended with 76% stating that no, they didn’t think Mike Ashley will ever spend more than £16m on a player while he is in charge at St.James’ Park, with just 24% believe he will. While fans are pretty much unanimous in not wanting to see big money spent on people who give very little back, such as Luque, Boumsong, Owen and so on, I do believe the vast majority of fans would see the sense in spending big money (more than £16m) if the next Alan Shearer, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo was up for grabs and Graham Carr was shouting buy buy buy! It is all about value for money and it isn’t the amounts of money paid out that is the big problem, it is when you have a fatal flaw in your recruitment process and the likes of Dennis Wise are allowed to bring in somebody like Xisco. His transfer fee may have been ‘only’ £6m but once his wages over the contract are added it probably at least equals that £15m fee Newcastle paid for Alan Shearer. I think what I would take from the voting is that firstly, fans don’t think Ashley will be here for that much longer, a few more years at the very most. Secondly, I think the general perception is that while he Mike remains at the club he will look to protect his investment but isn’t going to spend big to try and compete, whether that is top 6 or whatever.
