3 years ago today, I strapped on my first pair of skates. It consisted or wall hanging, falling, and maybe a little crying. But as practices passed I got a little bit better and was determined to be good. And now there are 5 junior teams in the tri state area, but the best part is I got to watch them all grow. Some of the skaters are getting ready to take their basic skills test while some are about to go to Nationals and Junior Con in Florida. Most important, without this sport I wouldnt be the same person. Derby has given me friends of all kinds, a second family that has supported me through thick and thin, and a chance to find who I really am. Id like to thank Brianne Francese , who taught me how to skate, Maureen Meara Langer and Sabrina Casa for pushing me every practice to work harder (Crocs), my beloved Renee Evans for giving me the best advice, my derby best friend/wife/derby prom date Maria Giorno for putting up with me 24/7, but most of all Id like to thank my dad, Jim Higgins ,the guy who has kept derby alive at some points and worked his but off to get me the best skating opportunities
