30 years ago exactly, this man left... No, was taken from us... Perhaps tragically, perhaps mercifully, in that he was finally free of his internal and external sufferings... Tomorrow, he would have been 75, were he able to overcome his demons and detractors. The legacy is equal parts triumph and tragedy and theres no separating the two. Further, whatever degradation he suffered in life is compounded today in death by those who diminish his legacy for opportunism and self-gain. America may eat its young, but it picks its teeth with its elders. To this day, I cant listen to the music any more without the nagging Coulda, woulda, shoulda hovering in the background, no matter how glorious, energetic or uplifting the performance. I cant hear the name Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. without becoming sad. Shakespeare didnt know the half...
