31st IndianOil SERVO Surjit Hockey from October 29. Jalandhar, Oct; 20 : Two Pakistani teams will be the main attraction in the 31st edition of the IndianOil SERVO Surjit Hockey Tournament, scheduled to be held here at local Olympian Surjit Astroturf Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park from October 29 to November 9. According to joint statement by the Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar Mr. Kamal Kishore Yadav, IAS, who is also the President of the Surjit Hockey Society and Olympian & Padamashree Pargat Singh, Working President of Society that the tournament is organized every year by Society to keep the name of Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa, ex-Olympian alive, who lost his life in a fatal car accident near Jalandhar on January 7th, 1984, while fighting hard for up-liftment of the National Game of Hockey in our Country. According to Mr. Kamal Kishore Yadav that this year Punjab-XI (Men) & Rest of Pakistan (Women) Teams from Pakistan will be the main attraction of tournament. Both teams have confirmed their participation but their visas are still in pipeline. The final participation of both the said Pak teams can only be confirmed after they get their visas. The Tournament will be played on knockout-cum-league basis. 20 top ranking teams in Men Section, including Last Years Champion Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi and Runners up team IndianOil, Mumbai will take part in this 12 days hockey bonanza. The other teams, are : Namdhari-XI Sirsa, CAG, New Delhi (Comptroller and Auditor General of India is the Runners up team of National Hockey Championship), Border Security Force (BSF), Bharat Petroleum Mumbai, Punjab National Bank Delhi, Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Delhi, Cops of Signal, Army-XI, New Delhi, Indian Air Force, Delhi, Indian Navy, Mumbai, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Punjab Police, Indian Overseas Bank, Bangaluru, Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL), Patiala, Northern Railways, Delhi, EME, Jalandhar, CRPF, New Delhi and Punjab-XI (Pakistan) In Women Section, Four Teams, namely Rest of Pakistan, Haryana-XI, Punjab-XI and Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala will take part. Matches will be played under Round Robin League Basis, Mr. Yadav Added. According to Padamashree Pargat Singh, Olympian & former Skipper of the Indian Hockey Team who is Working President of the tournament that as in the past 24 years, this year also, the Asia’s largest and leading Maharatna Oil Company IndianOil Corporation Limited will be the Main Title sponsor of the tournament whereas The Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi, CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar, Uppal Hospitality Group (UHG) Hong Kong, Pukhraj Health Care Pvt. Ltd; Tut Brother of USA and Ghakhal Brother of USA will be the co-sponsors of the tournament. The finalist will get the Cash Prize of Rs, 9.50 lacs. The Men winner team will get Rs. 5.00 lacs whereas the runners up team will be pocketed Rs. 2.50 lacs. In the Women Section, the winner & Runners up team will get Rs. 1.00 lacs & Rs. 0.50 lacs, respectively. The Best player of the tournament will get Late Sardar Mohinder Singh Tut Memorial Award along with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000. According to Mr. Iqbal Singh Sandhu, additional Deputy Commissioner, Phagwara who is organizing Secretary of the tournament that 9 teams have been placed in Knockout-cum-Qualifying Round while 11 teams including One Pakistani team have been seeded directly into League Stage. One team will qualify for league from the Knock Out-cum-Qualifying Round Matches. The Knockout-cum-Qualifying Round Matches will be held on 29th & 31st of Oct; 2014 and League stage matches will be from Oct. 1st to 6th Nov; 2014. The both semi finals of the tournament will be played on November 8 and the finals of women & men section will be held on November 7 & 9, respectively. There will be two matches daily in Men Section and One Match in Women Section. The Last two Matches of the tournament will be played mostly under flood lights. Under the slogan “Watch Hockey--Win ALTO Car, Motor Cycles, Refrigerators and LCDs”, this year also Surjit Hockey Society has also decided to award MARUTI ALTO Car, Motor Cycles, Refrigerators and LCDs to the spectators, who will come to witness the surjit hockey matches. The ALTO Car has been sponsored by TUT Brothers of USA, the leading transporters, farmer and the Owners of California Eagles Team of the ongoing World Kabaddi League. The main idea is to attract & to create more interest amongst the general public for our national game of Hockey. The spectators will get daily lucky coupons till Nov. 9th at the entry gate of the stadium while players will be issued the lucky coupons on the day of their first match. The lucky draw for the ALTO Cars and other prizes will be held on Nov. 9th, soon after the final match. The arrangements have been made for the LIVE telecast of both the Semi Finals & Final Match of the tournament on PTC Channels on 8th and 9th of November, respectively. All India Radio, Jalandhar will also relay the Ball-to-Ball running commentary of the final match. The renowned Punjabi Folk Singers Waris Brother (Manmohan Waris & Kamal Heer) will entertain the spectators during the Cultural programme before the start of the final match on Nov. 9th. NRI Mr. Gary Johal of Canada has sponsored the cultural programme. Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, Minister for Education, Punjab will formally inaugurate the tournament on Oct. 29, 2014. Mr. Parkash Singh Badal, Chief minister, Punjab would gave away the prizes to the finalists whereas Mr. Pawan Tinnu. CPS, Punjab & Padamshree Pargat Singh, Olympian & former Skipper of Indian Hockey Team preside over, Mr. P.K. Das, Executive Director, IOCL and Mr. Jatinderbir Singh,IAS, Chairman & Managing Director, Punjab & Sind bank will be Guest of Honour during the final of the tournament.
