33 Mongu houses up in flames MORE than 33 thatched houses in Mongu and Limulunga have been set ablaze, leaving families stranded and spending nights in the cold. In Mongu, more than 20 houses have been burnt by a suspected mental patient while 13 others were set on fire in Limulunga by unknown people. Police in Mongu have detained the suspect and will be subjected to medical examinations to establish his state of mind. Western Province Minister Josephine Limata, who confirmed the incident in an interview from Luampa yesterday, said the houses were burnt in Kama, within Mongu on Saturday. “Our people have lost everything they had in their houses… Thank God nobody was hurt in the fire,” she said. She said according to information obtained by Mongu district commissioner Maurice Litula, it is not clear why the houses were set on fire. Ms Limata said she will today travel to Kama to see the damage for herself. She said a team of experts from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit and Office of the Vice-President has already been dispatched to Mongu to establish the extent of damage. She said it is encouraging that officers from the DMMU and Office of the Vice-President have responded promptly to the incident and appealed to relevant authorities for assistance. On the fire in Limulunga, Ms Limata said locals suspect some “evil forces” are involved in outbreaks of fire in the area. She said fire outbreaks in Limulunga occur almost every year and destroy houses and property. “The people are saying the fires were started by evil spirits but I don’t believe in that myself. We just have to get to the bottom of this matter and bring the culprits to book,” he said.
