365/Day 233/August 21, 2014/Jeremiah 26-28/The Assurance August 21, 2014 By. Dr. Rodney Autry There is nothing that competes for the satisfaction of knowing you are doing exactly what God has called you to do. Whatever the will of God may be it is a peaceful feeling to know that you have found it and followed it. Discerning and doing the will of God for your life results in a number of things. Discovering and doing God’s will mean we can prioritize life. No one has time to do everything. Life is filled with innumerable possibilities. We can’t count the choices we confront. How does one choose what to do or perhaps even more importantly what not to do? For some the answer lies in the dollar figure. Whatever generates the fastest and fattest return gets their time. Others are driven by relationships; either those they have or those they want. The expectations of these people determine every decision. Still others are emotional hummingbirds frantically flying from one bloom to another without any discernible pattern. For these the word “priority” is almost vacuumed of all meaning. The man or woman who knows what God is up to in their life functions rather differently from all these. Priority is all about purpose. The plan of God permits you to decline numerous things as superfluous and focus on what you know that God has decided for your life. Knowing God’s will for our life will also allow us to anesthetize life. Be assured that regardless of what you decline to do you will have your critics. You will also generate criticism by what you do as well. Such controversy is enough to send many – perhaps most – to the showers with no desire to take to the field again. Knowing that you did not invite the criticism on a whim but at the express direction of God allows you to quickly rise above it. I would never maintain that there is no pain in criticism even when you expect it but when you know that you received it for a higher goal it is so much easier to take. The father rushing his child to the emergency room does not fear the police siren behind him and the man or woman doing the will of God is unafraid of the menacing threats behind him or her. Jeremiah found the will of God as a youth (1: 6) and followed it faithfully. Pity the multiplied thousands who never discover the will of God even in the wintry seasons of life. The prophet’s discovery did not inoculate him from trouble. You know better than that. He had as much trouble as other faithful servant of God and more than many. Life was often hard for the man Jeremiah but he had the calm assurance he was in the will of God. This wasnt a holy hunch; it was a settled conviction and that made all the difference. Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and the people, “The LORD sent me to prophesy all the words that you have heard against this temple and city. So now, correct your ways and deeds and obey the voice of the LORD your God so that He might relent concerning the disaster that He warned about. As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right. But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its residents, for it is certain the LORD has sent me to speak all these things directly to you” (26: 12 – 15). Notice all the assurance words Jeremiah used: The LORD sent me…. As for me…. But know for certain… for it is certain. This man knows he is wrapped in the will of God and knowing that he can stare into the steely eyes of death itself without hesitation, reservation or equivocation. That’s what the assurance that you are in the will of God can do for you.
