365 days of music you need to know...Day 11/365 This album was released 20 years ago this month - the 3rd release from Finnish metal band Sentenced. This was also the last album to feature original vocalist Taneli Jarva, whose delivery began as more of a throat-singing style more akin to extreme metal, and over time began to feature more clean passages to better complement the bands ever-evolving musical styling. Following this album, Sentenced took a complete left turn, moving further away form death-growls and black metal sonic styling, to focus more on melody, albeit dark and morose. They were often lumped in with the Funeral Doom subgenre, but remained more sonically accessible throughout their career - even incorporating quite a bit of black humor on later recordings, as they branded their sound Suicide Rock and won a bunch of European Grammys and other big awards. They never really broke here in the states, but successfully rode the Scandinavian Invasion that occurred in the late 90s/early 2000s, alongside such heavyweights as In Flames, The Haunted, Dimmu Borgir, and others. I first heard them on Wphs 89.1 Fm, broadcasting out of Cousino High School in Warren - it mustve been late 90s or so. Nepenthe is the lead single from the album Amok, released on Century Media Records in January 1995. https://youtube/watch?v=j55oEnYKhVM
