4 summer inspirations for your home 15 Oct 2013 The Zuko Duo Quick Pop Maker can make striped pops, yoghurt pops and flavoured core pops at a moments notice. Summer days are pulsing with life and colour, and the lush evenings outdoors play host to caramel sunsets. On one warm summer’s day, a modern, on trend family entertains old friends in their garden. Their neighbour sits on her balcony, enjoying a cool, easy breeze that makes her eyelids heavy and her head droop like an open flower. This is the life – a season best lived out in style and comfort. You can do the same with a few seasonal items and accessories for your home. Here’s a look at what this time of the year has to offer... Make ice pops Start your own vegetable garden with a little help from Reel Gardening. Freezing ice pops in seven minutes without electricity sounds like a dream, especially if you have little ones in the house. The Zuko Duo Quick Pop Maker comes with two sticks and will make up to six pops before the unit needs refreezing. This compact base is easily stored in the freezer so that you can enjoy striped pops, yoghurt pops and flavoured core pops at a moment’s notice. The pop maker is for couples, students and small families. Spend time in the garden Your attempts at braiding vegetable seeds with the soil are sometimes corrupted by inexperience and hungry birds. This summer, you can forgo the frustration and disappointment with some innovative gardening. Claire Reid, director or Reel Gardening, says reel gardening encases the desired seeds and organic fertiliser. She says the seeds in the reel are spaced at the correct distance. Summer memories don’t have to be soaked in greying outdoor furniture. You can take in all the nostalgia from a modern, classic style patio furniture set from Soliel. Reel gardening also indicates the planting depth and anchors the seeds in the correct place during germination, she says. “By keeping the paper moist and not watering the unplanted areas, one can save up to 80 percent of water you use in your garden.” This product range includes tomatoes, cabbages, spinach, basil, parsley and a number of other vegetables and herbs. With the heat bleeding into South African homes, the thirst for light and airy décor has never been so strong. Photo courtesy of Sandra Larkin from Plascon Spaces Showroom. You can have your furniture designed around a courtyard, under the stars or on the balcony where you and a close friend can share a drink. What will make it all worth it is finding durable outdoor furniture - an armchair and sofa that can weather South Africa’s climate and needs minimal maintenance. Cool off with colour With the heat bleeding into South African homes, the thirst for light and airy décor has never been so strong. This summer, grey walls will bring you and your interiors some relief. Claire Bond, Plascon’s Spaces Showroom manager, says looking at some of her friends’ homes, both in the Transvaal and in the Cape, grey is the new off white. She says when selecting a grey be aware that the colour has different undertones - some have a blue cool undertone and are best used in a modern home. Bond says she prefers a grey that has a warm purple undertone. “This does not mean that you will end up with a purple room, rather your room will appear warm instead of icy.” A grey with blue undertones works well in a contemporary scheme, she says. Pairing this light grey with whites, soft pinks, passive reds, gold and turquoise will breathe a soothing, cool rhythm into the space. - Katlego Sekano
