40 years ago tonight I was boarding at Central Fire Station whilst on training school. It was a terrible night which I will never forget. Just after 8pm all hell broke loose in the city as the first of two IRA bombs went off. Fire crews from far and wide came in and where dispatched testing the control and resources of the new West Midlands Fire Service. Birmingham taxi drivers were heros when the whole fleet of Birmingham black cabs became make shift ambulances for free. Emergency services were pulled back to the fire station when they believed a further explosion was imminent. The Fire station yard was full of crews covered in blood from the whole of the West Midlands. Anyone with an Irish accent was in serious danger of being lynched that night and had to stay off the city streets. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. R.I.P.
