400 More Parking Spaces in Town Centre at Old Naval Ground The Government has been able to agree with the developers of the Mid-Town Development that they should allow parking in the area of the old Naval Grounds that are not immediately being built as part of that development. The use of the old Naval Ground is now possible after the demolition of the old steel multi-storey car park. The area has been marked out to maximise the spaces available – which will be 400 in total. The area will be available for parking until the opening of the new coach park and multi-storey car park facility that will provide 1,000 spaces and which is due to open in Autumn 2015. During the intervening period, some parts of the old Naval Ground will need to closed off to parking as essential services and infrastructure are put in place for the Mid-Town Development. These addition parking spaces are in addition to the 220 which have been provided at Coaling Island of which 150 have been made available immediately. A government spokesman said: Government has been conscious of the need to provide parking, pending the completion of the new multi-storey facility. Now that the old car park has been demolished it is possible to use the part of the site that is not immediately being developed to provide temporary parking facilities by agreement with the developer and at no cost to the tax payer. Once the new facility is open the Government will also start work to deliver the addition green area to be known as Central Park which is an important part of the redevelopment of this area.
