44th ANNUAL NAHA TUG-OF-WAR Col. Leon Plummer, commander 10th Regional Support Group, takes part in the 44th Annual Naha Tug-of-War on Oct. 19th, in Naha, Okinawa. The event which first began in 1450 was done on special occasions. Since the 1970s it has taken place annually and represents prosperity, health, and good luck for the people of Okinawa. The rope was assembled in the Naha Military Port and has been assembled there since 1993; assembly of the rope takes 40days. This year was a draw between the East and West Wards of Naha. Each side has 13 wins and this year marked the 15th draw between both sides. There were several Americans and military service members who took part in the event with an estimated 273,000 people in attendance. In 1995, the event was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest straw rope used in a tug-of-war. 第十地域支援群司令官、リオン・プラマー大佐が10月19日に沖縄県那覇市で行われた第44回那覇大綱挽に参加しました。綱挽は1450年ごろに慶賀綱として始まり、古い歴史文化と誇り高い伝統を有する行事でした。1971年に那覇市制50周年記念行事として復活し、幸せと平和を引き寄せ、家庭円満、商売繁盛、子孫繁栄、無病息災を願う沖縄の伝統的文化行事となりました。1993年以来米軍那覇軍港内で網打ちされており約40日かけて行われます。通算成績は東西ともに13勝13敗、そして今年は15回目の東西引き分けとなりました。外国人や軍人も多数含め約27万3千人の参加となりました。ギネスブックによって1995年「世界一のわら綱」と認定され、那覇大綱挽はいまや世界一の綱挽とされています。
