5:00PM on June 3rd (Primary Election Day in Ala.) was the deadline for Independent Candidates to qualify for the November General Election. Since there is no Independent Primary in Alabama, the qualifying is accomplished by petition signed by qualified voters in the district or County being served by the office. The number of qualified voter signatures needed is set by Statute by percentage of voters in the district or county that voted in the last (prior) Governor’s election. The good news is that we learned by phone on election night that no Independent qualified for State House District 31 at the close of the deadline. I just re-confirmed that news this morning, and it’s now official: I don’t have an opponent for the November 4, 2014 General Election. Instead of campaigning for the next 5 months, I will be able to focus on my continuing education for the job, as well as planning for the 2015 Legislative session, which is scheduled to gavel-in in early March of 2015.
