5 militants of new Nepali rebel outfit arrested Sep 14, 2014, 12.24AM IST TNN GUWAHATI: A joint team of the army and police on Saturday arrested five militants of a new Nepali rebel outfit, the United Gurkha Peoples Organisation (UGPO). Troops of the armys Red Horns Division in a joint operation with Kokrajhar police, for the first time apprehended five Nepali militants at Matijhora village in dense jungles of Parbatjhora sub division of Kokrajhar district. Two 9mm Pistols (Italy made), one 7.65mm Pistol (US made), two country made Pistols and ammunition were recovered from them. All the militants are Nepali and belong to Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam. They had been staying in the village for last one month with the aim to recruit fresh cadres from Parbatjhora sub division and to train them in order to strengthen their new outfit. As per intelligence received by Special Branch of the state police, the outfit has been trained in Myanmar with assistance of NSCN (IM). After completion of training at Myanmar, they are working with Bodo rebel outfit, the NDFB(S). Army spokesman Lt Col Suneet Newton said that NDFB(S) is outsourcing these individuals for kidnapping and extortion. The arrested militants also had a hand in the kidnapping of four Bhutanese nationals in August from inside Bhutan. Around mid-August this year, NDFB(S) cadres had moved north from Parbatjhora sub-division towards Indo-Bhutan border due to number of successful operations conducted by security forces. Security forces had killed self-styled Section Commander B Geremsha of NDFB (S). Army sources said the militants of UGPO might have been used by NDFB(S) to fill the void to continue their terrorists activities in the area without attracting attention of security forces as inhabitants of Matijhora and adjoining villages are all Nepali. The arrests have brought to fore the new dynamics in Kokrajhar district, wherein, various militant groups are coming together for their mutual benefits.
