50 years ago the Republicans and the Democrats were facing off on issues such as racial equality, government spending for social programs and whether or not we should reduce the 90% top tax bracket for personal income or increase our involvement in a foreign war. The issues we face today are only slightly different. Instead of racial equality we are discussing the rights of immigrants and the benefits they should receive. We are still squabbling over tax rates, government spending and our involvement in wars not on our territory. But in my mind the biggest issue we face today is the number and types of jobs we have for our citizens. More and more the simple easy jobs are moved to foreign countries. The only jobs left to be had require extensive training or education. The rest do not pay enough to support the worker. We can blame anyone we want and it would not solve the problem. We need to seek solutions that benefit all parties involved. Lowering taxes on profits earned by operations located in our country for businesses might induce them to move their operations back to our country. Restructuring our welfare system to eliminate cash payments while opening government sponsored and operated day care facilities would enable many workers to accept lower wage jobs and provide the labor force necessary for companies to produce and profit in our country. It would also provide a stable environment for many children who are wandering the ghetto streets today.
