I think this is the film which influences director Wong kar-wai on the philosophy of 擦肩而過的緣份 (ca jian er guo de yuan fen, = the fate of passing through between people). 兰兰（林黛饰）和梅梅在冯氏歌舞团倒闭后，拿着团长的推荐信来到冯氏的宿敌马氏歌舞团。团长马太太对两人虽不计前嫌而且心生偏爱，但马太太的儿子，剧团经理马英（陈厚饰）却对二女怀有偏见。 兰兰很快成为马氏的台柱，她和马英无意间成为笔友，在通信中浓情蜜意，生活却摩擦不断，生发了不少误会。在剧团赴日本中巡演的前后，二人的误会不仅促成了梅梅和剧团男演员谢谢的姻缘，兰兰和马英也冰释前嫌，成为一对爱侣。
