Poem Name- Ranger’s Heavenly Orders There he sat I remember in his room, staring out the window thinking of the old days I assume, when he was fighting a war overseas, for America’s freedom and Liberty for the US Armies, Oh a proud man he was spoke of his days, of being a Ranger as he would sit and gaze, trained at Ft Campbell with the great 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle he brag, I would sit and listen and put on my schoolbag, One day when I returned home from school, Mom said grandpa was just stubborn as a mule, she smiled and said” spend some time with him he cares for you so,” at 90 he’s fighting life to keep his afterglow” I didn’t understand what she really meant by that, but when I looked in his room he was lying in bed, “come in boy, I have something for you” these 2 medals I won in the great World War 2”, So I walked by the bed and he handed to me, something more beautiful my eyes could ever see, the first was a Heart Purple with Gold around Washington, the second was incredibly wonderful bar none, When you looked at it there was a ribbon of blue, with the word Valor inscribed on it to, inside a case with words that fondly read, For conspicuous Gallantry that I couldn’t get out of my head, He looked at me I want you to keep, these medals for me while I go to sleep, remember my boy the Army’s the America’s Greatness for sure, and 101st Airborne Rangers have written the book of bravery and grandeur, Next day when I woke Dad and Mom and men in white were around, mom and dad picked me up talked safe and sound, “look honey grandpas with the Lord now he passed away in the night, he left us this note we want to read to you alright?” Grandson I knew last night as we talked the night as it grew, that this may happen so I prepared this for you, this country I cherish never forget what we agreed, grow up loving America for freedom’s not ever guaranteed, When you grow up join America’s greatest the Ranger’s I plead, be proud and steadfast and if you find your in ever dire need, call my name I’ll find you my word I implore, remember to always look to Jesus your he is our Savior, Then came the flash reality all around came through, the scream soldier “watch out!” as I jumped up and withdrew, I was a proud Airborne Ranger 101st it had to be, proud Army Screaming Eagle like my grandfather before me, Fighting men as no other, Arms with our Brothers, the enemy was getting to close, with an area unbecoming, someone screamed “in coming” As I dived on the ground engrossed! Then I looked all around, than heard a sound, I stared to shake I guess fear? I said very faint “boy grandfather what would you do in this situation if you were lying here?” When then suddenly a voice practically, scared me completely out of my wits, “I told you grandson call if you need and a Ranger does as he commits”, There’s a Job to do 400 feet to the north, is a brother who’s one of the band, you’re a Screaming Eagle my son lead out the men, it’s not the time to bury your head in the sand, I stood Ranger pride with a ghostly figure beside, there was my brother his body was broken and tossed, all the men seemed lost not sure what to do, I said Follow me as I kept my fingers crossed, My Brother hurt so badly with no gurney around, I asked the men to strap him to my back, let’s remember our training first and foremost Eagles let’s not get off the beaten track We marched through the night, grandfather filled with delight suddenly the ghostly essence disappeared! The distant light beamed suddenly it seemed that the Screaming Eagles had persevered, All the men ran screaming we made it I couldn’t have been more proud, as I looked to the sky replied “Grandfather Thank you on your distant Heavenly cloud!” I was honored with the Army DSM for leading the men that night, yet to be honesty truthful it just didn’t seem so right, we were all hero’s it seemed we fought by each other’s side, it’s all about Iraqi freedom as we come from far and wide, I’m going to make it my life forever this Army 101st Screaming Eagles Band, I’ll train men of liberty, Freedom, I’ll make them understand, America must live forever its way of life prevail, for without the ideals of Liberty and Freedom the world will surely fail, God and Grandfather in Heaven I owe my heart and life to you, Army’s my life forever a Ranger through and through, but Grandfather if you hear me those medals you gave to me? Hang in my room in Honor for your great grandchildren to see, America’s Army Rangers 101st Gallant who live to never fail, since the Revolutionary War they came as history has seen them prevail, you’re a tribute and honor to America the Greatest Country on the earth, so in recognition this poem is written for you for giving America’s Freedom and Liberty Birth!
