They said it would be in the interest of the North for a former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are all northerners, to join forces in order to win the 2015 presidency. The President of the AYCF, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the North would not stand a chance of producing the next president if the trio did not amicably choose one of them as a consensus candidate. He said, “The fact is that the three leading presidential aspirants are from the North. From the look of things, we are not even prepared because if we are prepared we, the northerners, should have unanimously taken a position to stand by one person who may be presented on the platform of the APC. “We should have by now had a discussion and these three should have agreed among themselves to allow one person to go while the others will support him. But for now, from all indications, President Goodluck Jonathan will win the 2015 election and it would be easier for him than the 2011 election because the votes will be divided, the interests will be divided.” Shettima added that if the trio and other aspirants from the North were working in the interest of northerners, their personal ambitions should be secondary. He said, “At the end of the day, I don’t see these people working together because I have worked with them. From their antecedents they are not likely to agree with one another. You have Atiku who is bent on ruling Nigeria and Buhari, who believes he is the only messiah that can save Nigeria. We also have Kwankwaso who believes he can turn Nigeria around. “We hope that one of them will emerge and the others will support (him) so that at the end of the day, Jonathan would be given a good fight. I do not think we are really prepared. The question is are they really working in the interest of northern people? If they are working in the interest of northern people, do they all need to compete at the same time?” The AYCF president, however, added that some northerners were more interested in electing a President that would really develop the North, saying he must not necessarily come from the North. He noted that some northerners that had ruled the country and left most parts of the North with abject poverty and mass illiteracy. Source: PUNCHNEWS
