As we commemorate the 64th Memorial Day of the Korean War, it is my great honor to express my warmest greetings to Col. Kim In Soo, Defense Attaché, representing Korean Embassy, Honorable Chairmen Um Ik-Ho, Park Hyun Mo, Kim Chun Bae and Kim Young Ki, and all other participants from the Veterans Association, the Korean National Unification Advisory Council, and the Korean Senior Citizens Association in the Philippines. More importantly, on this special day of reflection, self-sacrifice and generosity, we would like to welcome with open arms the members of the PEFTOK Veterans Association headed by Ret. Col. Paterno Viloria. During the War in the early 1950s, the PEFTOK members had bravely fought and nobly sacrificed their lives. More than 7,000 Filipino soldiers set foot in Korea to help us preserve the freedom and democracy of the Republic of Korea. Since then, the relationship between our two countries has been bonded by blood. I, therefore, would like to concentrate my address today to these devoted PEFTOK soldiers, and express our sincere and utmost gratitude. Several decades have passed since PEFTOK members participated in the Korean War and many of the members have already passed away. Your courageous deeds and selfless acts will, however, live on forever in our memories. We, Koreans, are indeed very appreciative of what you have done for us during our nation’s most difficult period. And, with this appreciation and brotherhood we feel toward you and the Filipino people at large, we will continue to forge a relationship with the Philippines that will honor the history we share together. Our government has also strived to create synergies for the mutual benefit of our two countries. On behalf of the Korean community here, abroad and in Korea, I would once again like to offer our immense appreciation for your great sacrifice to our struggling nation during the War. I, sincerely wish this meaningful commemoration is continued through the generations, particularly through this Memorial Day of the Korean War. May our two nations always move forward with the backbone of our strong and intimate relations in all our endeavors and triumphs together. Thank you very much and God bless you. Mabuhay! Young Baek Lee President of the Southeast Asia-North Region, The National Unification Advisory Council of the Republic of Korea. Chairman of the United Korean Community Association in the Philippines.
