6-yr-old girl among six people injured by dogs in Kashmir capital A six-year-old girl was among six people injured when a pack of dogs attacked them in Kashmirs summer capital, Srinagar in Saturday. Onlookers watched in horror late this afternoon when Madhiha Ayaz was tossed around like a rag doll by a stray pack in Diyarwani of Batamaloo, witnesses said. Dogs pounced upon Madhiha when she was on way to a religious seminary. The dogs mauled her face, leg, groin and arm and according family sources, no vaccine was available at the SMHS hospital for her treatment. The hospital has a special care facility for dog bites. “I shifted my poor daughter to SKIMS hospital and to my surprise, here too no vaccine was available to treat dog bitten patients,” Ayaz Ahmed, he father said. Soon after the incident, the pack of dogs attacked at least five persons including an elderly man who were also shifted to hospital. The locals identified them Abdul Salam Hakim (60), Ali Muhammad Dar (40), Abdul Manan (18), Nisar Ahmed (20) and Tasleema Bano (32). Locals staged a massive protest against Srinagar Municipal Corporation and alleged that authorizes are more interested in animal rights than protecting the lives of humans. “There are at least six dogs particularly a black dog that attacked people especially children. If SMC fails to take care of them then we will kill them one by one ourselves,” a resident Fayaz Mushtaq said. SMC commissioner, Dr Qasba was busy in an ‘important’ meeting and did not respond to repeated phone calls. Health authorities say 53,925 people - mostly children - have been bitten by stray dogs in the 10 districts of Kashmir in the past four years. Some of the victims have died of rabies. Records at Srinagars Anti- Rabies Clinic show 12 dog bite-related deaths in the last three years alone. Things have become so bad that the Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission has described dog attacks as violation of human rights.
