The bear loved to sit in a bush and watch the mother and father and two brothers and sister in the backyard, hugging and playing with their dog. He thought, “That seems like a good life.” The sad part of the story is that the family’s dog died, and the bear cried just like the family did. Then the bear decided to be the family’s new dog. He left the woods and walked to the backyard’s fence, and the family ran into the house screaming, “Bear!” The bear whined, “Nnnn nnnn nnnn,” while the family watched through a window. When the bear wagged his backside, the father whispered, “Looks like a happy bear.” When the bear sat down and panted like a dog, the father said, “Never seen a bear do that before.” And when the bear picked up a stick and swung his head to toss it then fetched the stick and brought it back to the fence, the father came out of the house and walked slowly toward the fence. The father said, “Easy, bear. Easy.” And the bear said, “Nnnn nnnn nnnn.” The father walked closer and the bear wagged his backside, so the father reached out his hand, palm up, for the bear to sniff. From that day forward the family never closed the gate to their backyard. They would put water and dog food outside, and even though the bear preferred berries he ate the dog food everyday. As time went on the family grew so fond of the bear that they let him into their house. And after awhile everyone in the family forgot that he was a bear. The way they remembered it, they had found a dog and named him Bear. Bear loved how the family hugged and played with him in the backyard. He thought, “This is a good life.” And the family loved their big, brown dog happily ever after.
