£7.2m for paving in Hanley, £60m current estimate for the Smithfield Centre in Hanley. ZERO, ZILCH, DUCKS EGG for a whole town. Now dont get me wrong, I know it can be argued that money has been sourced from different pots, European funding, English Heritage, Townscape etc etc etc (though, in my experience there is normally at least some element of match funding involved meaning a some financial commitment should come from the applicant). Anyway, the sooner Fenton and the rest of this city has town councils the better. Without them it is DEAD And it is coming... what a landmark occasion it will be for us so called parochial, backward looking Stokies! Theres not been a town council in this area since federation 104 years ago when the urban district councils of the 6 towns awkwardly came together after a few failed attempts. Distribution of spending has to be fairer across the city for the sake of within and without, and its a matter of civic pride, beautification, heritage tourism, and at town level, all contributing to the greater good - better together, vis unitas fortior, blah, blah, blah... Currently the situation, for Fentonians at least, is akin to theft, where householders pay their fair share of council tax but see a minimum in return. Tell me, where would you rank a fabulous Victorian town hall, containing a superbly unique memorial to WW1 among this citys list of priorities? Before a bit of paving? Not the Labour group. To them: Value of Fenton Town Hall = 0 (sorry, amendment £1000 from ward councillors) Value of memorials inside = 0 Value of Fenton square = 0 (value - measured as financial commitment given to reclaiming the town hall for the people of Fenton) Inevitably, their perceived value on disappearance will rise as we look at the town hall in digital matter only (the real thing long gone).. And its that fact that epitomises the callousness of todays leaders and their cronies in Stoke-on-Trent. Sorry about that, bit of a rant. No, actually I take that back. Im not sorry at all! youtube/watch?v=jhdFe3evXpk
