70 years ago today, U.S. forces captured an airfield in the Solomons in the Battle of Munda Point. Little known to history, this is a significant event in my family history. From here, field-modified B-25s would wreak havoc to Japanese cargo shipping throughout the remainder of the war across the entirely of the Solomon Islands and the remainder of the South Pacific. Mostly absent command structure, these crews acted out on "spotter" reports from island observers and depended entirely upon second-hand supplies and fuel "left over" from shipments to front line units. By the time the Navy encountered Truk Island ("the Gibralter of the Pacific"), for example, there was little else to sink.
