7TH APRIL 2014 TO 27TH JUNE 2014 Cape Peninsula, West Coast, Boland as well as Gauteng, Durban and Port Elizabeth Creating an informed Youth and Cancer free South Africa Off the back of a successful 2013 campaign, members and volunteers of Can-Sir & partners Cancer Buddies, will once again create the opportunity of addressing students during the 10c for Cancer Balls n Hooters Cancer Education Campaign, in order to deliver talks and demonstrations on an important subject and topic affecting young boys and girls from adolescence and especially with the introduction of the Cervical Cancer Vaccination. Sanctioned and endorsed by the WC Department of Health, the purpose of our education run which will be held from the 7th April 2014 to 27th June 2014 at various school and tertiary institutions across the Cape Peninsula, West Coast and Boland as well as Gauteng, Durban and Port Elizabeth, is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems such as Testicular Cancer, Male & Female Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among teenage boys and girls. Cancer has the 2nd highest mortality rate around the World and in South Africa, compared to HIV/Aids which ranks 4th, a proven fact... We have therefore opened the campaigned to the general public, primary schools, religious and other institutions to help raise as much 10c coins as possible so that we can help people and communities cope with the effects of cancer. Due to strict rulings from WCDE and WCDH, we will focus our talks and presentations to students from Grade 7 to Tertiary level due to the age group and the sensitive nature of the subject matter. Testicular cancer in young boys and men, and breast cancer in young girls and woman is steadily increasing, which really is alarming!!! But the successes of early detection campaigns are preventing these diseases from becoming out of control; in fact it is keeping the numbers down and the cure rates of cancer increase due to early onset of treatment. The 10c for Cancer fundraising project is linked to this educational campaign. The thinking is that so many people just discard their 10c coins because they are virtually worthless, but to us if they’re collected and banked – they can make a world of difference on many levels: • Assisting to provide Cancer education on prevention campaigns • Assisting in breaking down Cancer stigma • Enable us to provide much needed support services to cancer patients and their families through the Cancer buddies project and support groups across the country • Our NGO is also actively involved in cancer advocacy initiatives, that lobby’s for more equity concerning cancer treatment and services to previously disadvantaged groups in our communities Although the focus will be on learning institutions within the poorer and disadvantaged communities, it will not be limited to those communities; therefore we encourage the broader communities within our region, to also become involved. In order to make this a fun event, we ask that all communities, students, parents, teachers and staff, collect Ten cent (10c) coins and hand them to us on the day of our visit, There is no cost to your school; all we ask is for the collection of the coins. The Cancer education campaign will also fall in line with your “Life Orientation” syllabus, sub category “Health Promotion” which I am sure does not need explaining. The past year’s responses to our awareness campaign has been overwhelming, with a call to expand the program nationally across South Africa. Can-Sir, together with our partners Cancer Buddies, intends to maintain this momentum by encouraging the participation of the general public, as was so successfully done in 2013. We are therefore proud to announce our Banking Partner, FNB (First National Bank) a division of First Rand LTD, who have opened their doors to the public, to donate or deposit there 10c For Cancer coins at any of their branches nationwide by following normal banking processes.
