8 years ago today was probably the worst day of my life. I was on patrol in Iraq and my convoy was called to go pull security for another mission. We had just turned around when I heard a large explosion. I couldnt see what had happened but I knew it couldnt be good. By the time I could see the vechile that got hit with the IED I saw several people trying to extract the gunner. I knew he was hurt and I needed to be there, I eventually convinced the vehicle commander to get me closer and I ran to the truck. I started pulling the gunner out who was very badly injured; the first medic told me he was dead. If you know me, Im a stubborn asshole and started working. Low and behold he had a faint pulse and weak breathing, but he was alive. I started assessing and found where the bleeding was coming from. Luckily the RTO had already called for a MEDEVAC bird. Due to nature of the injury another nearby aircraft diverted and picked up the Soldier. He was in the OR very quickly which I am sure saved his life. I have had major issues with coping after the incident. The reason being, I knew the man and his family, if my convoy didnt turn around I am 100% I would br dead due to the shrapnel coming through the back window where I would have been sitting and it hit the 2nd truck in their convoy (same one I was in). I have had 8 years removed and I still can remember Brian Pearce sitting up and cussing me out, which honestly was the best ass chewing I have ever had and gave me the confidence he was going to be fine. Brian and his wife have done a lot for wounded warriors and continue to fight and inspire the shit out of me. For how shitty of a day it was for me; I cant imagine the hell they went through. Happy Alive Day Buddy!
