805 million. That’s a huge number right? Well that is the amount of people who are undernourished in the world today. Phrased a different way, 1 in 9 people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. In a world where the... amount of food we waste is enough to feed these 805 million people, this is categorically wrong. Hunger is not just present in third world countries and does not only refer to starvation but also undernourishment. Chronic undernourishment results in lack of energy, a weak immune system and the inability to retain the bodies natural state. The acute homelessness problem faced in Vancouver needs to be combated and until it is hunger will remain a particularly prominent feature in Vancouver, the disparity between rich and poor is one of the most noticeable in the developed world. That is why, we at World Vision UBC strive to make the life of the thousands of people suffering from homelessness and poverty better. World Vision UBC is extensively involved in projects in the Downtown Eastside, an area where the effects of homelessness in Vancouver are most obvious, working with Food Banks and other organisations. This Halloween World Vision members are participating in Trick Or Eat, Trick Or Eat is a youth led national event hosted by Meal Exchange, which collects non- perishable food items instead of candy from homes within the local community. The food items are then donated to local food banks. We are doing this because food donations remain the most effective way to address hunger in the short term. Meal Exchange also aims to raise awareness about hunger in Canada through household flyers, educational materials and online resources as a way to help end hunger within Canada in the longer. WVUBC is extremely passionate about ending hunger in Vancouver and that is why we work with Meal Exchange on the annual night of giving. If we all work together one day those 805 million people, including the homeless people we see on our streets everyday, will no longer feel the ache of hunger. Please help support World Vision UBC in this mission.
