90 percent of people drive paying attention to an area 50 yards in front of them..they react to situations as they come up. If people drove with my attention span, observations and analyzed everything around them all the time like I do..they would be in a mental institution in a week. Example: I asked Julie on the ride home from the camper today if she remembered when the guy came right up next to her in her lane while he was on the on ramp..(last week)..Yes, he almost ran me off the road. Here is how the situation developed for me. I am following her on the bike. We come under an overpass and I see a car coming down the ramp. He is moving at a fast speed. I know he will get to the freeway exactly at the time Julie gets beside the end of the ramp. I know that the truck that is coming up to overtake her on the left will get to just behind her at that time. I know that the guy coming up behind all of us in the left lane doing about 85 will be about 20 yards behind him at that point. And I know exactly how all three will react. The guy on the ramp will be surpised that Julie is there...Julie will be surprised to see him and make a quicker lane change than she normally would..the guy passing her will be far enough back that he doesnt need to hit his brakes..but the quick reaction of Julie will have him do so...the Dale Earnhardt coming up behind will hit his brakes much harder. The 90 percent of drivers I mention would have pulled over in the left lane and be in between the passing truck and Dale Earnhardt when this all occurs. But not me. I drop back 100 yards and watch it all play out: Ramp guy is shocked and swerves right all the way to the sleeper strip. Julie looks quickly left and moves fast into that lane...passing truck hits his brakes...and Earnhardt dips his nose down sharply on his brakes. I smile because I knew what everyone was going to do and all the actors in my play played their parts exactly as written. Where would your mind be?
