#98 – “Gates of Babylon” by Rainbow By 1975, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore ran out of options within the confines of that band and decided to form a new one, based strictly on his own ideas. Initially, this served him and rock music fans well. Until 1978 (during the band’s finest period), Rainbow featured Ronnie James Dio on vocals and this partnership recorded three albums. The last, 1978’s “Long Live Rock ’n’ Roll”, includes “Gates of Babylon”, which features one of Blackmore’s favourite solos (and he sure had a few). Following this album, Rainbow became commercially more successful but musically less intriguing.
