A $2-million renovation is underway at a former Douglas Street motel to prepare it for transitional housing. “It will look brand new,” owner Mike Kelly said Tuesday. Discussions have taken place with a community organization to use the property for short-term housing, he said. No agreement has been signed and Kelly did not want to identify the agency at this time. The use fits permitted zoning, he said. The aim is for half of the 47 units at 3025 Douglas St. to be ready for occupancy in early December, with the rest completed early next year, he said. Six will be barrier-free for people using wheelchairs. Each unit is a studio apartment, ranging from about 300 to 400 square feet in size. Renovations at the motel, near Mayfair Shopping Centre, began this summer. Walls were taken down to the studs and workers are rebuilding the property, Kelly said. - See more at: timescolonist/business/old-motel-revamped-for-short-term-housing-1.1386691#sthash.E6BYFBBj.dpuf
