A 26-year-old man, Rufai Idowu, has been ordered to be remanded in prison custody by an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping and strangulating a 10-year-old girl to death. Idowu was said to have committed the alleged offence on November 4 at about 5p.m. at Oosa compound, Ile-Ogbo in Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State. It was gathered that the accused person had earlier confessed to have committed the offence when he was apprehended by the police. The victim, according to the suspect, lured him into raping her when she paid him a visit at his family residence in their own town. The accused person was arrested by a team of detectives from the state Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh. Inspector Fagboyinbo Abiodun, the police prosecutor, told the court yesterday, that the accused forcibly and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the girl when she came to his room on a visit. Abiodun further explained that the accused took advantage of the girl and later strangulated her with the hijab (female Islamic head wear) she was putting on, while she tried to call for help. He maintained that the offence committed by the accused was contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11, laws of Osun State 2003. The plea of the accused was, however, not taken due to the gravity of his offence. The presiding magistrate, Mr. Adebayo Lasisi, ordered that the accused be remanded in custody at Ilesa prison and adjourned the case till January 7, 2014 for mention.
