A BASIC GUIDE FOR OILs........ There are many oils on the market today I just want to share 3 main oil types. 1-mineral oil, 2-semi synthetic oil and 3-fully synthetic oil. All 3 oils have different tolerances and usages. 1 Mineral oil - Mineral oil is common and the cheapest. This oil is mainly used for steel engines. Engines with a steel block (were the pistons are) and a steel head (were the valves are) Mineral oils are good for any old vehicles with a steel engine, because steel engines dont produce as much heat as alloy engines and the oil holes are much wider inside than the modern alloy ones. This is why mineral oil does not perform as good on modern engines because the modern engines run at a higher running temp and have smaller oil holes. Also using mineral oil for newer vehicles raises the risk of oil sludge in your engine. Mineral oil should be changed every 4,820km. Most taxis use this oil because its cheap. But it will shorten the life of a modern engine with minimium protection. Your vehicle is not a taxi so look after your engine. 2 Semi Synthetic oil - Semi Synthetic oil is basically a mineral oil mixed with some synthetic oil its a blend of oils mixed together. This oil is good for all engines, steel or alloy, old and new vehicles. Semi Synthetic oil should be changed about every 6,430km 3 Fully Synthetic oil- Fully Synthetic is 100% Synthetic oil It has the highest heat tolerance of all the oils and its the finest oil that can lubricate your engine at its peak. Its a better oil than the other two. Its not true that fully synthetic oil causes oil leaks its just a finer oil that goes through already leaking oil seals much easier than a mineral or semi synthetic oil. So if your engine leaks oil then fully synthetic oil will leak more because its finer oil. Its also not true that once you use fully synthetic oil you cannot go back to another oil thats a myth! You can go back from fully synthetic to semi synthetic. And you can use any quality brand of oils you dont have to stay with only one oil brand. Fully Synthetic oil can be used for all vehicles both old and new. But because its the most expensive oil with the most protection its mainly used for new high performance and turbo engines. For Ford Rangers Semi Synthetic oil is sufficiant enough. But if you do allot of towing or heavy loading and allot of heavy traffic driving then fully synthetic oil is good as well. Fully Synthetic oil should be changed every 8,000klm So to sumerize this post. Mineral oil is only good for vehicles 2000 and below because mineral oil has a low heat tolerance and less engine protection compared to semi and fully synthetic oils. It cannot keep up with the demands of modern engines as semi and fully synthetic oils can. But mineral oils will eventually be phased out. Semi and fully synthetic oils are better than mineral oils for old and new vehicles so if you want the best protection for your engine use only a semi or fully synthetic oil and forget the mineral oil.
