A BIT OF JESUS EACH DAY- DAY 62 TEXT: MATTHEW 10: 42 EVEN A CUP OF COLD WATER… The context in which a word is used defines the meaning it connotes. A typical word is “even”. When I say that: “Even that woman’s son made it…how much more my son?” it could be considered derogatory. Today Jesus uses the word ‘even’ in another context to draw our minds to the little things we sometimes fail to do. He says that: “and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward." (Matt 10:42) It is might have sounded surprising to the audience to hear Jesus talk about giving water to others because it was the simplest act of hospitality. And even that simple act merits a reward. For me the use of the word “even” is worth reflecting on. The question is whether I even show the simplest acts of hospitality to others? Do I even help an old woman who is carrying a load and needs help? Do I even greet when I need to? Do I even give out clothing I might not need to those who need them? Do I even pray? Do I even smile? It is not only giving so much in terms of monetary value that merits reward, even a cup of water does. A priest shared with me that one of the greatest gifts he had received was during his Thanksgiving Mass. A little girl walked straight up to him on the altar and presented to him a 5 pesewa coin. Even in her dependence on others she gave all she had that day. Even a child understands little acts of generosity, how about us?
