***A Brief Note on the FB Name Change*** I realized -- because of my Facebook handle people think they should call me Khelsilem Rivers. I can’t remember if I introduced myself as this or not but it is catching on unfortunately. X̱elsílem* kwi en sna. [Khelsilem is my name.] To be more specific -- it is my ancestral name. This name was given to me by my grandmother. It was the ancestral name carried by her great-grandfather. It most likely was carried by his ancestors as well. It has been handed down through the generations. I share this name with a relative in Musqueam as well. Khelsilem is also one of a few ancestral names I carry. Rivers is a surname that I have from my father Kevin Rivers. My grandfather was Frank Rivers Sr. My great-grandfather was Dennis Rivers. And Dennis Rivers’ father was named Onesime La Riveré. La Riveré became Rivers. It is an English and then previously French surname. Khelsilem is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh name. The two dont mix. If I have to introduce myself, I say that Dustin Rivers is my government name. X̱elsílem (Khelsilem) is my human name. *X̱elsílem is how my name is spelt using the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh writing system. I write it Khelsilem when using my name in English writing contexts. I chose to use the /kh/ letters to represent the /x̱/ sound found in my language because of August Jack Khatsalano using the same letters for the same sound.
