A COURT yesterday sentenced activist Zainab Al Khawaja to 16 - TopicsExpress

A COURT yesterday sentenced activist Zainab Al Khawaja to 16 months in jail for insulting a government official and damaging public property, her lawyer said. Ms Al Khawaja had already been sentenced to three years in jail and fined BD3,000 on December 4 for insulting the King by tearing up his photograph. She was freed on bail and that sentence was suspended pending an appeal. However, yesterdays verdict was effective immediately. Zainab got one year in jail for insulting a government employee and four months in two cases related to damaging public property, said her lawyer Mohammed Al Wasati, who added that those cases dated back to 2012. Ms Khawaja, who did not attend yesterdays session, is out of Bahrain after a court lifted a travel ban imposed on her because her lawyer claimed she needed to travel for her work as co-director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights.
