“A Change Is Gonna Come,” 20 years as a longtime. For 20 years my friends I have walked around with a story. I’ve also had to deal with great professional and personal loss because of a decision I made 20 years ago. To stand up for my rights as a black American and the rights of black Americans to have equal opportunities to participate equally. It’s a decision that I made that if I had to do it all over again I would do it! Even if I knew then that years later it would still be affecting my professional life but more importantly my personal life. I’ve had to watch those I love the most walk away from me because they feel that they can’t be with or around a person who won’t let racism go. Who won’t compromise their position and that unwillingness to compromise translates into several types of difficulties in the relationships! Today I found out that one of Sam Cooke’s most famous songs had to do with racism and the pain of racism. I’ve often said to those closest to me that I could never treat any people the way I have been treated by many white Americans and I would never treat white Americans that way either! In the movie four little girls about the Alabama church bombings. Spike Lee interviewed the mother of one of the little girl’s that was killed that Sunday. The mother said that her husband that is now deceased went to his grave not understanding how a people could hate another people so much. I must say the same goes for me. I will go to my grave not understanding how a people whose lives has depended so much in this country on people of color starting with the native people could hate and want to destroy people of color in particular black Americans so much. I now also understand why every time I hear the song it’s very emotional for me.
